Westminster top for car prangs

WESTMINSTER-TRAFFIC-4.jpgNew figures show that Westminster has the highest number of accident prone roads in the country.

The constituency of Westminster and Cities of London has the most routes on which you are likely to prang your car, followed by Bristol East.

Tenth on the list is Kensington and Chelsea and all of the top ten are in the south of England.

The figures, revealed on new website www.keepmoving.co.uk, show that Cities of London and Westminster is also the constituency with the most traffic jams. It is the only London area on this list, and is followed by Exeter.

Cabinet member for environment and transport Cllr Danny Chalkley said: "Westminster's prominent location in the centre of London's business and tourist districts and at the seat of the government, makes it the most congested and polluted borough in London.

"Traffic levels have been further affected by the large amount of recent utilities work as Victorian water mains and gas pipes are replaced.

"Westminster Council is currently awaiting Department of Transport approval to introduce a permit scheme for anyone needing to work on the roads.

"The permit scheme would aim to reduce congestion through increased coordination and planning and by reducing the number of overrunning works areas affected."
