Bayswater CCTV 'killing trade'

Traders in Bayswater have called for a CCTV traffic camera in their street to be scrapped, claiming it is killing their businesses.

Moscow Road traders were dismayed when Westminster Council installed a camera nine months ago to combat congestion and fine motorists who park on double yellow lines.

But rather than tackle congestion, say traders, the council is fleecing motorists by not warning them of parking restrictions.

Michael Audisho, owner of Archie Food Store on Moscow Road, said: "We are fined for unloading the van for a few minutes and my customers keep sending me their £60 parking fines from when they last visited the shop. I have lost almost half my regular customers in the last nine months."

"There are no warning signs and sometimes have somebody outside the shop warning people."

A Westminster Council spokesman said he was unsure whether there were adequate warning signs but added that restrictions are in place 8.30am-6.30pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am-1.30pm on Saturdays and delivery drivers could continuously load or unload for up to 20 minutes without being fined.

"We are working hard to improve road users understanding of the rules and provide clearer signs and lines," said council assistant director of parking Kevin Goad. "I am puzzled at the suggestion that legitimately parked vehicles are receiving tickets."
