Restaurant infested with mice and cockroaches

An Italian restaurant with mouse and cockroach infestations has been prosecuted.

Il Siciliano, in Dean Street, Soho, was found with out-of-date food in the fridge, dirt and grease on the kitchen floor, walls and cooking equipment.

Westminster Council prosecuted restaurant owner Agata Baranowska at Westminster Magistrates' Court last Thursday for 17 separate offences.

The owner was fined £2,850 and ordered to pay £2,478.60 in costs.

The 17 offences relate to two visits by environmental health officers on March 4, 2008 and September 9, 2008.

The restaurant was kept in a disgusting condition with mouse droppings found on a gas meter, a cigarette end on the floor by a walk-in chiller and cockroaches in the kitchen.

Food well past its sell-by-date, including a bottle of fresh double cream, which was one week old, and a tub of mascarpone cheese which was nine days past its best.

Westminster Council's cabinet member for community protection Cllr Daniel Astaire said: "Il Siciliano had an appalling track record for food hygiene for instance, using out of date cream and mascapone, and repeatedly put customers at risk.

"I hope this prosecution sends a stark warning to other restaurants in the area that we will not tolerate sloppy standards."

We'd like to hear from you.
