Jobs boost for Westminster's unemployed
More than £600,000 will be pumped into creating almost 100 jobs for young unemployed people in Westminster.
The cash, given to Westminster Council by the government's Future Jobs Fund, will create jobs in a variety of sectors including childcare, clerical and hospitality for 18 to 24-year-olds who have been out of work for at least nine months.
Recent figures show that youth unemployment in Westminster grew by 62 per cent between July 2008 and July 2009, from 665 to 1,075.
Cllr Brian Connell, Westminster Council's cabinet member for economic development and family policy, said: "This cash is a big boost to the local economy as many young people are finding it hard to access employment opportunities at the moment.
"Over the next few months we will focus our efforts on helping young residents not in education or training so this funding has arrived at an important time and will give them the chance to learn key skills that will prove crucial in the future."
The jobs will be coordinated in conjunction with Westminster Kingsway College, environmental charity Groundwork and other local employers.
JobCentre Plus will screen potential candidates.
The funding was announced at a meeting last week of the Citizens and Business Policy and Scrutiny Committee.
