Football to improve Westminster men's health

The power of football is behind a new project to improve the health of men in Westminster.

A grant of £139,000 will go towards Chelsea FC's community department, to use the football' to promote healthy lifestyles among men in the south of the borough.

To kick-start the scheme, the club has employed project officer Paul Barnes to engage with local men.

Mr Barnes, a qualified football coach, will provide one-to-one support with assistance from his team to encourage men to improve their health through football-related activities such as training, match competitions and quiz evenings.

Michael Cole, Chelsea's London development manager, said: "Men have traditionally suffered health inequalities as they do not visit doctors and other health professionals as often as women to address their health concerns.

"By engaging men in sporting activities, we hope to be able to promote the benefits of a healthier lifestyle as well as referring participants to the relevant health agencies.

"Men will also be able to access job-related training and support to find work, which they may not usually find out about."

The New Football Pools donated £89,000 and NHS Westminster provided £50,000 of the funding for the Premier League Health project.

The scheme will run for three years, and is part of a national programme to improve men's health and healthcare across the country.
