Paddington's Crossrail station approved

A green light has been given for a Crossrail station to be built in Paddington.

The existing Hammersmith and City Line, which dates back to the 1930s, will be demolished and replaced with a modern steel and glass building, partly powered by solar panels and with a green roof to attract birds and insects.

A new entrance will be on the north side of the station, leading from the canal towpath to both the new Hammersmith and City Line tube station and and the existing main line station.

At Paddington, Crossrail will run through an underground tunnel with platforms to be built underneath Eastbourne Terrace.

The existing taxi rank in Eastbourne Terrace, known as the Departures Road, will be moved to the north side of the main station in an area known as the London Street Deck.

A ramp will be created from Bishop's Bridge Road to provide access to the new taxi rank.

When complete by 2017, Crossrail will travel from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, through tunnels under central London.

The plans were approved by Westminster Council's planning committee on Thursday (4) last week.

We'd like to hear from you.
