Fines for those caught urinating in the street
Twelve shame-faced revellers learned the hard way that when nature calls, it can come at a price.
As part of London's biggest ever crackdown on people urinating in streets, they were all brought before court after they were caught red-handed in places including Victoria and Soho.
They were all sentenced and fined a total of £1,900 by City of Westminster Magistrates' Court, with fines ranging from £50 to £250, after they were either found guilty or admitted to the offence of urinating in a public place.
This followed a crackdown by Westminster Council and the Met police in the run up to Christmas.
Dr Leith Penny, the council's strategic director for city management, said: "I hope these court cases send a very clear signal to visitors to our area that we will not tolerate such behaviour, which is deplorable.
"Not only is it offensive and unhygienic to urinate in the street, it costs a small fortune to clean up the mess and get rid of the putrid smell which seeps into brickwork and paving."
