Paddington GP dies after fall

Posted by Juliet Eysenck on Mar 3, 10 02:27 PM in Court round-up

A retired Paddington GP died two days before Christmas after falling from his hospital bed, an inquest heard.

Dr Peter Nicolaides, of Cabbell Street, was staying at nearby St Mary's Hospital because of a series of health problems.

Formerly a doctor in Harley Street, his ill health forced him to stop working and his wife Kiki became his carer for several years.

Westminster Coroner's Court heard this morning (3) that Dr Nicolaides was admitted to the hospital in November, with heart failure.

He had improved by December 8 and plans were being made for him to return home to be looked after by his wife.

But in the early hours of December 12, confused and disorientated by his stay in hospital, Dr Nicolaides tried to get out of bed and fell, breaking two ribs.

His condition became worse, and he died in hospital on December 23, two days before both Christmas Day and his 91st birthday.

A post mortem showed he died of heart failure and pneumonia, made worse by the rib fractures.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe recorded a verdict of accidental death.

We'd like to hear from you.
