Parent Power comes to North Paddington
Temper tantrums are set to be banished from homes and classrooms thanks to parenting classes at a North Paddington school.
Around a dozen mothers attend the Parent Power sessions at St Stephen's CofE Primary School, in Westbourne Park Road, under the leadership of Jessica Chivers.
They are coming to the end of a nine-week programme, which aims to improve relationships between parents and their children.
The classes were set up by Joanne Cash, the Tory party candidate for Westminster North, who is expecting a baby herself in July.
She said: "A mother told me that she has stopped smacking her daughter as a result of coming to Parent Power.
"This is just one of the many changes parents have made as a result of taking part.
"I congratulate the headmaster Paul Voural on helping to make this such a success."
The sessions, grounded in psychology, measure improvements in children's behaviour over time.
The aim is to provide parents with a better understanding of ways to balance warmth and discipline, so they can work with the school to get the best out of their children.
The Parenting Skills programme, targeted at parents with children of primary school age, is a free scheme which is also being piloted in the East End and in North Ireland.
