Green plan for Chelsea Barracks

Posted by Emma Heseltine on Jun 15, 10 11:01 AM in News

Controversial plans to redevelop the Chelsea Barracks site have been given a green makeover by a friend of Prince Charles.

The new plans, drawn up by landscape artist Kim Wilkie, are for 600 homes set around a 'market garden' which includes vegetable plots, beehives, orchards and a nuttery.

The team behind the latest £3 billion proposal includes Mr Wilkie, one of the Prince's favourite designers, and is a far cry from the Lord Rogers' steel towers design, which Charles was opposed to, and which has since been withdrawn.

Mr Wilkie said: "These plans are based on London's garden squares, and we hope that residents would eventually be able to become self-sufficient, producing their own food."

These latest plans for the 12.5 acre site also include Garrison Church, which residents battled to save, and which will be used as an arts and community centre.

A spokesman for Lord Rogers said this week: "It was extremely disappointing that this application was withdrawn in response to Prince Charles' views less than a week before the council was due to consider it."

A letter from Prince Charles complaining about the original design of the Chelsea Barracks flats plan was leaked earlier this year, allegedly by PR consultant Christopher Joll.

However, Mr Joll could not be reached for comment.

The leak has been the subject of a High Court case, which is due to be ruled on in the coming weeks.

But in the latest twist, the court was told that the owners of the Chelsea Barracks site, Qatari Diar, deleted emails to try and make sure that the royal involvement was not used as evidence in the case.

Lawyers for the firm dismissed the claims as 'entirely unjustified.'

However, the judge has now asked for new witness statements, which could see the developers, Candy brothers' claim for compensation rumble on for weeks.

In the meantime, the new, greener plans are set to be submitted to Westminster Council in the coming weeks, and will be decided on later in the summer.

We'd like to hear from you.
