Welcome return for Marylebone's oldest pub
Marylebone's oldest pub has been re-opened by a new landlord after a three-year closure.
Sean Martin now stands behind the beer pumps at the Barley Mow, in Dorset Street, which was originally built in the late 1700s.
In 2007, the pub closed its doors to allow for renovation work to flats sitting above the popular watering hole.
On Thursday (July 1) last week, Westminster Council's licensing committee granted a licence and by Friday, the pub had re-opened, to the delight of customers.
Mr Martin said: "I used to come here years ago and knew the old landlord, so when it became available I said I'd take it on.
"It's a listed building, so we've kept all the original features intact.
"We've just cleaned it up a little bit.
"It took a little longer than expected for the building work to be finished, but so far there has been a good response from customers.
"There aren't many original pubs left like this one, they've all been destroyed or renovated."
Despite horror stories of pubs closing down across the country due to the recession, Mr Martin remains confident the Barley Mow will prove a success.
He said: "I've not heard of many closing down in the West End.
"Friday was quite busy and the customers loved the fact that we hadn't changed a thing since it was open before."
Writing on Beer in the Evening's website, drinkers have expressed excitement about the pub's re-opening.
Geoff Brandwood wrote: "A major tragedy that this pub is closed. It's quite unique for its two charming, tiny Victorian wooden drinking booths attached to the bar counter."
RJB1973 added: "Hopefully no drastic improvements will occur to the interior."
Over the next few weeks, Mr Martin is planning to hold a real ale festival with different types of ale available each day of the week in a bid to encourage former customers to return.
Ingredients used in the pub's food will be sourced from the local community where possible.
Mr Martin also owns the Northumberland Arms in Goodge Street and a third pub in Ireland.
