Her novel Broken Places features a character called Eric who is abandoned as a child, but goes on to meet the love of his life Mandy, who lives in St George's Square.

NORTH PADDINGTON: A fire broke out at a three-storey house in North Paddington yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the house in Fernhead Road at 2.50pm and the blaze was under control by 3.30pm.

A Notting Hill Carnival revellerTrouble marred the close of the Notting Hill Carnival with missiles being thrown at police as night fell on Monday.

More than 20 arrests for public order offences were made as revellers clashed with officers close to the end of the carnival route.

Rogue locksmith jailed

MARYLEBONE: A locksmith has been jailed for four years after taking advantage of residents by breaking down doors when they were locked out and massively overcharging for installing new locks.

Mark Makowski, 40, who operated Pronto Locks Ltd with a business address based in New Cavendish Street but was actually based in Hertfordshire, was convicted of 15 counts of fraud at the Old Bailey earlier today.

Brit wins memory competition

PADDINGTON: For the fourth time in a row, Ben Pridmore won the UK Open Memory Championship which was held this year in Kingdom Street on Thursday and Friday last week.

He scored the highest in a series of challenges, including remembering the order of packs of shuffled playing cards, historical dates and names and faces.

My name used to be Gail Welton and I lived at 10 Kilburn Lane on the Queens Park Estate from 1950 - 1966.

My family lived in Paddington from at least the 1880s.

Tributes to murdered Pimlico spy

Gareth WilliamsThe family of murdered Pimlico spy Gareth Williams have paid tribute to a "generous, loving" man.

The body of 30-year-old Mr Williams, sealed in a sports bag, was discovered by police at his top floor flat in Alderney Street, on August 23.

Mr Williams, who worked for intelligence organisation MI6, was last seen alive in London on August 15.

A St John's Wood school has been praised for offering a "safe, caring and friendly environment" for its pupils in its latest Ofsted report.

Government inspectors judged Barrow Hill Junior School, in Bridgeman Street, as "good" during their latest visit.

GREEN PARK: As part of a campaign to raise money for a memorial to honour the 55,573 men of Bomber Command who gave their lives in World War Two, members of the public are being invited to donate £20 or more to have their personal messages placed in a time capsule.

The capsule will be buried within the the foundations of the memorial, due to be built near Hyde Park Corner in late 2011, and will stand for thousands of years.

Protest planned for Pope's visit

Pope Benedict XVIA protest is being planned to oppose the state visit of Pope Benedict XVI when he comes to London next month.

Protesters will march from Hyde Park Corner to Downing Street on September 18, the third day of the Pope's four-day visit to the UK.
