Pimlico market becomes community hub
An historic market in Pimlico has been relaunched as a community hub.
Tachbrook Street Market has undergone a ã1.6million transformation over the last year, including improved lighting, new stalls and resurfacing work.
On Saturday, deputy Westminster mayor Councillor Alan Bradley hosted the official opening ceremony alongside fellow councillor Nickie Aiken and Pimlico residents.
The revamp work was carried out by Westminster Council, which has now appointed Westminster Artisans Ltd to manage the marker by bringing in new traders and devising themed markets and events such as late night shopping, gourmet lunchtime offers, fashion Thursdays and a Christmas market.
Discussions are already being held to launch a Pimlico Food Festival in spring 2011.
This follows on the success of Maida Hill Market, which opened in Harrow Road last summer.
Councillor Brian Connell, Westminster's cabinet member for business and enterprise, said: "Markets are a source of pride for residents living near them and play a vital role in the heart of local communities.
"They help increase the appeal of shopping districts and can be a boost to overall trade by increasing visitor numbers.
"I'm confident Tachbrook Street Market will prove a great success and reaffirm the council's support for our markets."
Councillor Alan Bradley added: "Each time I visit the market, I find the tempting new food offers irresistible."

Having lived in Pimlico all my life i can honestly say that i have seen changes, Tachbrook St market used to be one of the best markets around, but due to this latest makeover it has turned into a market for the upper class person not for the average joe public, i have spoken to a lot of people who say they will not use the market anymore for two reasons, 1, it's turning into a food market, and 2, it's to expensive, what i would like to know is where was the general public consultation on this i don't remember there being one, but then what can you expect from this council it would have gone ahead anyway, well i for one won't be using the market anymore, i think it's a waste of money.
