Suitcase body killer found guilty
A manhunt which began after a woman's body was found dumped in a suitcase at Heathrow airport 12 years ago has finally come to an end.
At the Old Bailey on Monday, Youseff Wahid, 42, was found guilty of murdering 28-year-old Fatima Kama.
Following the murder he fled the country and travelled to various Middle Eastern countries, living under false names in an effort to evade justice.
The pair were staying at a flat in Portsea Place, just off Edgware Road in Paddington, which belonged to a mutual associate.
On July 17, 1999, a body was found abandoned in a suitcase on an airport luggage trolley in a car park at Heathrow airport.
A security guard forced open the bag and discovered the body, which was later identified as Ms Kama.
She had been a Canadian citizen for at least two years prior to her murder and was a regular visitor to London.
She arrived in the country for the last time on July 10, 1999, on a return ticket to Canada, due to fly back to Montreal that evening.
Fatima had stayed at the address earlier that year and on returning to the UK this final time, had organised to sleep over at the flat.
Her body is believed to have been transported in a suitcase by train from the murder scene to Heathrow airport.
A post mortem revealed she had received multiple stab wounds and was sexually assaulted.
Police issued appeals to trace the suspected killer and in 2010, he was tracked to Bahrain.
Officers worked together with police in Bahrain to locate and arrest him, resulting in the first extradition of a UK fugitive from the country.
Detective chief inspector John McFarlane said: "This was a callous and shocking murder which has left a family grieving the loss of a beloved daughter.
"They have spent the last twelve years with no answers as to why this tragedy has happened to Fatima.
"I am pleased that finally they have had justice.
"Wahid has spent twelve years evading police and has refused to face up to what he has done, his only interest is himself.
"The relentless pursuit of him should send out a strong message that the Met will not give up in an effort to seek justice for the victim's and their families."
Wahid will be sentenced on October 3.
