Tristan HenryA 'violent and dangerous' teenager has been jailed over a vicious attack in Maida Vale which left a young man brain damaged.

Tristan Henry, 17, was involved in an altercation with a 23-year-old man on board a bus, which then spilled out onto the street.

At Southwark Crown Court, he was handed an indeterminate sentence, to serve a minimum of seven and a half years and a maximum of 15 years.

Henry, of Hatley Road, Islington, denied attempted murder but was unanimously found guilty following a trial in October.

He admitted possessing an offensive weapon and theft.

In the early hours of May 29, Henry, who was then 16, became involved in a fight with a passenger on the N98 bus.

The court heard the victim had been watching the Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona at a friend's house before taking the bus.

He and a friend, who were chanting 'Barcelona' and singing loudly, were told to be quiet by a number of passengers including Henry.

The court heard the victim then began to tease him about his colour by making 'monkey noises'.

Henry knifed the man in the heart and left lung in front of horrified bus passengers, before stealing his wallet, containing £40, and a mobile phone.

The victim was taken to hospital but has been left with permanent brain damage and unable to move his arms or legs, following the ordeal.

Henry was arrested on June 2 and charged with attempted murder, after the victim's mobile phone was found at his home address.

He admitted carrying the knife and stabbing the victim, but claimed he acted in self defence.

Speaking after the sentencing on Tuesday, detective constable Haydn Thoms said: "Tristan Henry is a violent and dangerous young man who not only stabbed the victim, but went on to steal from his as well.

"The victim has been left severely brain damaged, requiring round the clock hospital care for the remainder of his life.

"I would like to pay tribute to the victim's family who have conducted themselves with dignity through what has been a terrible ordeal.

"I hope this conviction goes some way towards providing them with a degree of comfort.

"This case highlights the tragic consequences caused by knife crime and our commitment to bringing those offenders to justice.

"I hope that anyone who carries a knife considers the dire consequences to themselves and their communities."

We'd like to hear from you.
