A police sergeant was struck in the head and a burglar broke his leg and back in a dramatic roof-top chase.

The male officer disturbed two suspects in offices in Margaret Street on Saturday last week around 11am.

He chased one onto the roof and was smacked with a heavy tool causing serious head injuries. The officer has since been discharged from hospital.

A 32-year-old man was arrested after he slipped and fell from the roof. He remains in hospital with a broken leg and back.

Another 28-year-old man was later arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses and a third assailant who may have been driving a VW Golf get-away vehicle parked in Great Titchfield Street.
